If you trade stocks or just like keeping an eye on the markets, you know how important timing is. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is one of the biggest and busiest stock markets in the world - but depending on where you live, it’s not always obvious when it opens. Here’s a quick and simple guide to help you stay on track.
The NYSE is open Monday through Friday, and the official trading hours are:
9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time (ET)
Outside of those hours, there’s also pre-market trading and after-hours trading, but most of the volume happens during the regular session.
Pre-market: 4:00 AM – 9:30 AM ET
After-hours: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM ET
Just a heads-up: the NYSE is closed on weekends and public holidays like Christmas and Independence Day.
Since the NYSE follows Eastern Time (ET), you might have to do some quick timezone math - or you can just check our live countdown instead.
Here’s when the NYSE opens in some major cities:
City | Local Opening Time | Local Closing Time |
---|---|---|
New York | 9:30 AM | 4:00 PM |
London | 2:30 PM | 9:00 PM |
Zurich | 3:30 PM | 10:00 PM |
Hong Kong | 9:30 PM | 4:00 AM (+1 day) |
Sydney | 12:30 AM (+1 day) | 7:00 AM (+1 day) |
Keep in mind: Daylight Saving Time can shift things by an hour depending on the season, so it’s always smart to double-check.
The NYSE shuts down for major U.S. holidays. Here are some of the days you’ll want to remember:
New Year’s Day
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Independence Day
Thanksgiving
Christmas Day
On some of these holidays, the market might close early (like on Christmas Eve). You can find the full NYSE holiday calendar here.
The first and last 30 minutes of the trading day are usually the most active. That’s when prices move the most, and many traders plan their strategies around those times.
If you’re serious about trading - or even just buying a few shares here and there - it’s smart to know when the action starts.
